HOW TO USE A TELECONVERTER ! IS IT GOOD OR BAD?
WHEN MOST OF YOU BOUGHT YOUR FIRST CAMERA “KIT”, YOU MAY HAVE BOUGHT IT WITH A “TELECONVERTER”. IT WAS JUST PART OF THE PACKAGE, RIGHT? SO, WHAT IS THE TELECONVERTER, WHAT DOES IT REALLY DO, AND HOW DO YOU USE IT? THAT IS WHAT WE WANT TO GO OVER WITH TODAY. TO SOME IT IS SOMEWHAT OF A MYSTERY, AND TO SOME, IT’S PRETTY SELF EXPLANATORY. BUT, FOR SURE I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE FACTS ARE OUT THERE NOW, BECAUSE EVEN I DIDN’T KNOW ALL THE DETAILS OF WHAT THIS LITTLE TOOL DID TO MY PHOTOS.
#1 = A TELECONVERTER IS A LENS THAT GOES BETWEEN THE BODY AND A LENS TO GENERALLY MAGNIFY OR DECREASE THE MAGNIFICATION OF YOUR EXISTING LENS.
LET’S USE A GOOD EXAMPLE OF WHAT IT DOES, AND USE THE MATH ASSOCIATED WITH THE TELECONVERTER. THE MOST COMMON TELECONVERTER IS THE 2X TELECONVERTER. THAT WOULD MEAN IT TAKES AN EXISTING LENS AND MULTIPLIES THE FOCAL LENGTH OF THE LENS BY 2X. SO, IF YOU GOT AN 18-55 ZOOM LENS WITH YOUR CAMERA, THEORITICALLY YOU PUT THIS TELECONVERTER ON YOUR CAMERA BETWEEN THE LENS, YOU WILL DOUBLE THAT 18-55 LENS TO A 36-110 MM LENS. WHAT MAKES THIS A BIG DEAL TO MOST PEOPLE IS THE PRICE OF THE TELECONVERTER. AND THAT IS WHY MOST PEOPLE GET THAT IN A KIT. IT COSTS YOU HARDLY ANYTHING TO GET THAT IN THE KIT. MAYBE $20 IN A KIT. WHAT WOULD IT COST TO BUY A LENS THAT WAS 36-110 MM LENS? FROM THE MANUFACTURE IT WOULD COST YOU 200 TO 300 DOLLARS MAYBE (IF THEY MADE SUCH A LENS). SO THERE HAS TO BE SOME DRAWBACKS TO THIS RIGHT? WELL THERE IS, AND AS LONG AS YOU KNOW THAT, THEN YOU ARE OK. EVEN THE NAME BRAND MANUFACTURES MAKE THESE, SO IT IS NOT A BAD LENS….. SO, I WANT TO GET THAT OUT OF THE WAY. IT IS STILL A HIGH QUALITY LENS. THERE ARE BAD ONES TOO. AND THAT IS WHAT YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL OF. THE ONES THAT SOMETIMES COME IN KITS, ARE NOT EXACTLY THE BEST QUALITY. BUT, IN GENEREAL, HERE IS THE THINGS YOU WILL LOSE BY HAVING A TELECONVERTER ON YOUR CAMERA:
A- WHAT THE TELECONVERTER ADDS IN FOCAL LENGTH, YOU LOSE IN EXPOSURE RANGE. TAKE A LOOK AT THIS TELECONVERTER BELOW:
FIRST OF ALL, I AM NOT PICKING ON ANY PARTICULAR BRAND OR TELECONVERTER AT ALL, THEY ARE ALL THIS WAY. LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THE LENS ELEMENT ON THIS. SO, HOW DO YOU EXPECT TO GET MUCH LIGHT THROUGH THIS? THAT IS THE POINT TO THE TELECONVERTER. IT MAGNIFIES YOUR LENS, BUT DECREASES THE CAPABILITY OF YOUR LENS TO GET LIGHT THROUGH IT. SO, IF YOUR LENS NORMALLY GOES DOWN TO AN F STOP OF F4, IT NOW WILL ONLY BE AN F5.6 OR EVEN AN F8, IF IT’S A CHEAPER TELECONVERTER. YIKES! THAT MEANS, THIS LENS NOW HAS TO BE USED ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY OUTSIDE, BECAUSE YOUR LENS NOW DEMANDS A LOT OF LIGHT.
3- JUST AT THERE IS A TELECONVERTER, THERE IS ALSO ONE CALLED A “WIDE ANGLE CONVERTER”. USE THE SAME MATH WITH THIS AS YOU WOULD WITH THE TELEPHOTO CONVERTER. I HAVE ONE WITH THE SPECS: 0.43X CONVERTER. SO, WITH MY 18-55 MM LENS, I WOULD TAKE THE 18MM AND MULTIPLY THAT BY .43 AND NOW I HAVE A WIDER ANGLE LENS THAT EQUALS = 7.74MM LENS !!! AND IT SAYS IT HAS MACRO IN IT AS WELL !!! CAN YOU IMAGINE THE PHOTOS I CAN GET? WELL, AT SOME POINT, I WILL DO A PRODUCT REVIEW OF THIS LENS AND SHOW YOU.
