HOW TO USE A TELECONVERTER ! IS IT GOOD OR BAD?

WHEN MOST OF YOU BOUGHT YOUR FIRST CAMERA “KIT”, YOU MAY HAVE BOUGHT IT WITH A “TELECONVERTER”.  IT WAS JUST PART OF THE PACKAGE, RIGHT?  SO, WHAT IS THE TELECONVERTER, WHAT DOES IT REALLY DO, AND HOW DO YOU USE IT?  THAT IS WHAT WE WANT TO GO OVER WITH TODAY.  TO SOME IT IS SOMEWHAT OF A MYSTERY, AND TO SOME, IT’S PRETTY SELF EXPLANATORY.  BUT, FOR SURE I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE FACTS ARE OUT THERE NOW, BECAUSE EVEN I DIDN’T KNOW ALL THE DETAILS OF WHAT THIS LITTLE TOOL DID TO MY PHOTOS.

#1 =  A TELECONVERTER IS A LENS THAT GOES BETWEEN THE BODY AND A LENS TO GENERALLY MAGNIFY OR DECREASE THE MAGNIFICATION OF YOUR EXISTING LENS.

LET’S USE A GOOD EXAMPLE OF WHAT IT DOES, AND USE THE MATH ASSOCIATED WITH THE TELECONVERTER.  THE MOST COMMON TELECONVERTER IS THE 2X TELECONVERTER.  THAT WOULD MEAN IT TAKES AN EXISTING LENS AND MULTIPLIES THE FOCAL LENGTH OF THE LENS BY 2X.  SO, IF YOU GOT AN 18-55 ZOOM LENS WITH YOUR CAMERA, THEORITICALLY YOU PUT THIS TELECONVERTER ON YOUR CAMERA BETWEEN THE LENS, YOU WILL DOUBLE THAT 18-55 LENS TO A 36-110 MM LENS.  WHAT MAKES THIS A BIG DEAL TO MOST PEOPLE IS THE PRICE OF THE TELECONVERTER.  AND THAT IS WHY MOST PEOPLE GET THAT IN A KIT.  IT COSTS YOU HARDLY ANYTHING TO GET THAT IN THE KIT.  MAYBE $20 IN A KIT.  WHAT WOULD IT COST TO BUY A LENS THAT WAS 36-110 MM LENS?  FROM THE MANUFACTURE IT WOULD COST YOU 200 TO 300 DOLLARS MAYBE (IF THEY MADE SUCH A LENS).  SO THERE HAS TO BE SOME DRAWBACKS TO THIS RIGHT?  WELL THERE IS, AND AS LONG AS YOU KNOW THAT, THEN YOU ARE OK.  EVEN THE NAME BRAND MANUFACTURES MAKE THESE, SO IT IS NOT A BAD LENS….. SO, I WANT TO GET THAT OUT OF THE WAY.  IT IS STILL A HIGH QUALITY LENS.  THERE ARE BAD ONES TOO.  AND THAT IS WHAT YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL OF.  THE ONES THAT SOMETIMES COME IN KITS, ARE NOT EXACTLY THE BEST QUALITY.  BUT, IN GENEREAL, HERE IS THE THINGS YOU WILL LOSE BY HAVING A TELECONVERTER ON YOUR CAMERA:

A- WHAT THE TELECONVERTER ADDS IN FOCAL LENGTH, YOU LOSE IN EXPOSURE RANGE.  TAKE A LOOK AT THIS TELECONVERTER BELOW:

FIRST OF ALL, I AM NOT PICKING ON ANY PARTICULAR BRAND OR TELECONVERTER AT ALL, THEY ARE ALL THIS WAY.  LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THE LENS ELEMENT ON THIS.  SO, HOW DO YOU EXPECT TO GET MUCH LIGHT THROUGH THIS?  THAT IS THE POINT TO THE TELECONVERTER.  IT MAGNIFIES YOUR LENS, BUT DECREASES THE CAPABILITY OF YOUR LENS TO GET LIGHT THROUGH IT.  SO, IF YOUR LENS NORMALLY GOES DOWN TO AN F STOP OF F4, IT NOW WILL ONLY BE AN F5.6 OR EVEN AN F8, IF IT’S A CHEAPER TELECONVERTER.  YIKES!  THAT MEANS, THIS LENS NOW HAS TO BE USED ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY OUTSIDE, BECAUSE YOUR LENS NOW DEMANDS A LOT OF LIGHT.

B- YOUR AUTOFOCUS WILL SLOW DOWN!  OH, NO!  I WANTED TO USE THIS FOR WILDLIFE!  I CAN’T AFFORD TO HAVE MY AUTOFOCUS GO SLOWER!  YOU HAVE MORE “LINKAGE” BETWEEN THE MAIN LENS AND THE BODY NOW.  IT’S CALLED PHYSICS OR MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.  I KNOW PEOPLE WHO USE THIS GO TO MANUAL FOCUS.  THEY OFTEN CAN FOCUS FASTER.  JUST A TIP  TO TRY.

C- TELECONVERTERS WILL MAGNIFY CAMERA SHAKE.  WELL SO DO BIGGER LENSES TOO.  THAT IS EXPECTED.  SO, GOING TO A BIGGER LENS WILL DO THAT NO MATTER WHAT.  PLEASE, GET A TRIPOD.  TRIPODS CURE A LOT OF BLURRY PHOTOS.  AND GET ONE THAT DOESN’T ALLOW YOUR CAMERA TO BLOW OVER IN THE WIND.  THE ONES THAT COME IN KITS…… THEY ARE GOOD FOR…… ????…… I AM NOT SURE WHAT THEY ARE GOOD FOR.  NOT FOR $500+ CAMERAS.

2- SO, WHY WOULD YOU EVEN BUY A TELECONVERTER, AFTER THAT LIST ABOVE?

A- THE REASON IS JUST AS THE OPPOSITE OF THE LIST ABOVE:  THE PRICE!!  WHAT A GREAT WAY TO GET A GOOD, BUT NOT GREAT, BUT GOOD TELEPHOTO LENS THAT WILL EXPAND YOUR LENS COLLECTION.  AND YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY TO PHOTOS THAT YOU MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO BEFORE

B- YOU CAN ACT “STEALTH-LIKE” AND QUICKLY GET A LENS ON YOUR CAMERA WITHOUT IT LOOKING SO BULKY.  IT’S SO SMALL, AND EASILY GOES ON, MOST PEOPLE WON’T THINK YOU WILL BE GETTING MUCH OF A CLOSE-UP PICTURE WITH THAT LENS.

3-  JUST AT THERE IS A TELECONVERTER, THERE IS ALSO ONE CALLED A “WIDE ANGLE CONVERTER”.  USE THE SAME MATH WITH THIS AS YOU WOULD WITH THE TELEPHOTO CONVERTER.  I HAVE ONE WITH THE SPECS:  0.43X CONVERTER.  SO, WITH MY 18-55 MM LENS, I WOULD TAKE THE 18MM AND MULTIPLY THAT BY .43 AND NOW I HAVE A WIDER ANGLE LENS THAT EQUALS = 7.74MM LENS !!!   AND IT SAYS IT HAS MACRO IN IT AS WELL !!!  CAN YOU IMAGINE THE PHOTOS I CAN GET?  WELL, AT SOME POINT, I WILL DO A PRODUCT REVIEW OF THIS LENS AND SHOW YOU.

HERE IS WHAT IT SAYS FROM THE MANUFACTURE:
The camera’s angle of view multiply the camcorder, digital/video camera by 0.43 times, which more than doubles the angle of view of the camera. Great for landscapes or recording in situations where a little creative curvature of field , it is wanted for a certain style. This excellent lens can be separated in two pieces (unscrewed): macro part and wide angle part. So you can use it both ways: like macro lens (without wide angle part) and like wide angle with macro together! This is a very unique feature of this lens for its price. So for the price of only ONE lens you are getting TWO! Professional 0.43x Super Wide Angle Lens *0.43X Professional Deluxe High Definition Super Wide Angle Lens *Built-in MACRO lens for extreme close-up shots *Digital SLR Pro Lens *Professional High Definition: PHD Lens reduces glass flare & ghosting caused by reflections.

MY ADVICE:  IT IS WORTH THE PRICE!  SHOULD THESE LENSES BE USED IN PLACE OF A GOOD TELEPHOTO OR WIDE ANGLE LENS OR MACRO LENS:  NO, BUT IT’S A STEP THAT MOST PHOTOGRAPHERS TAKE ON THE WAY UP TO THOSE PROFESSIONAL LENSES, AND THEIR QUALITY IS GOOD AS LONG AS YOU STICK WITH NAME BRAND OPTICS.
