INFORMATION ABOUT THE “ATLAS MOUNTAINS”:

The Atlas Mountains extend some 2,500km across northwestern Africa, spanning Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, separating the Atlantic and Mediterranean coastline from the Sahara Desert. Actually a series of ranges with diverse terrain, climates and wildlife, the Atlas are dotted with Berber villages and riven with canyons and ravines. The highest peak is 4,167m Toubkal, which lies within Morocco’s Toubkal National Park.

While the best-known area of the Atlas Mountains (and the one that we’re most concerned with), the High Atlas, is located in Morocco, along with the Middle Atlas and Anti-Atlas ranges, the full range covers three countries. The Saharan Atlas is located in Algeria. And the Tell Atlas and Aures Mountains spread between Algeria and Tunisia.

The first region consists of three ranges, all located in Morocco. They are the Middle Atlas, High Atlas, and Anti-Atlas ranges. The High Atlas range (also called the Grand Atlas) is the highest range in the Atlas Mountains.
The second region is the Saharan Atlas located in Algeria.
The third region is the Tell Atlas located in Algeria and Tunisia.
The fourth region is the Aures Mountains in Algeria and Tunisia. They are at the eastern end of the Atlas mountain range.
